North Bali Container Transport & Trucking

Container transport in North Bali is the road haulage of loaded and empty containers between Bali’s ports, inland depots and delivery sites across Buleleng — including trailer haulage, container lifting, side-loader delivery and the return of empties to the depot within the shipping line’s free period. North Bali Logistics runs that leg for importers, exporters, contractors and distributors who need a box moved from a terminal to a site that a standard trailer may not easily reach.

What does container trucking to North Bali involve?

The distance from Benoa Port in the south to Singaraja on the north coast is short on a map and long in practice, because the route crosses Bali’s central mountain range on roads with gradient, width and turning constraints that ordinary road-distance calculators ignore. That fact governs equipment choice, scheduling and cost on almost every container job in the north.

A typical movement covers collection of the delivery order, pickup of the container from the terminal or depot, the road leg north, positioning at your site, unstuffing or a live unload, and return of the empty box to the nominated depot. Where the site cannot accept a trailer, the container is devanned at a yard and the cargo transferred to rigid trucks.

Which equipment do we deploy?

Equipment selection is not a preference — it is dictated by the box size, the cargo weight, the site’s turning circle and whether a lifting device is available at the delivery point.

Equipment Typical use Site requirement
20ft trailer haulage Standard and heavy 20ft containers Firm ground, turning space, reversing access
40ft trailer haulage 40ft standard and high-cube containers Wide approach, generous turning radius
Side loader / self-loading trailer Ground-level container drop without a crane Level hardstanding beside the trailer
Rigid truck transfer Cargo devanned at a yard, delivered in parts Narrow lanes, steep or restricted access
Mobile crane assist Lifting a container over an obstacle or onto a plinth Stable crane setup area and clearance
Reefer-capable trailer Refrigerated containers requiring power in transit Power supply or genset at destination

Where a shipment arrives as a shared consignment rather than a full box, the container is deconsolidated first — see our LCL and FCL container shipping page for how that changes the delivery profile.

Why does the free-time clock matter so much?

Shipping lines grant a limited number of free days for using their container and for occupying terminal space, and once those expire, detention and demurrage accrue daily against the consignee — charges that regularly exceed the cost of the trucking itself when a box sits at a site waiting to be emptied.

The implication is that container transport should be scheduled backwards from the free-time expiry, not forwards from the arrival date. We check the free period on the bill of lading at the start of the job, confirm unloading capacity at the site, and build a slot that returns the box inside the window. Where a site cannot unload quickly, devanning at a yard and delivering in stages is usually cheaper than holding the container.

Routes and delivery coverage across the north

Buleleng Regency stretches roughly 150 kilometres along Bali’s northern coast, and delivery planning differs materially between the western, central and eastern sections of that corridor.

  • Singaraja and surrounds — the regency capital and the main commercial receiving area, generally trailer-accessible
  • Lovina and Kalibukbuk — hospitality corridor with mixed access; many properties on lanes off the main road
  • Seririt and Banjar — agricultural and distribution hinterland with good main-road access
  • Pemuteran and the far west — long haul from either port; often best served via the Gilimanuk approach
  • Tejakula and the east coast — coastal road with narrower sections and limited turning space
  • Munduk and the northern hills — gradient and hairpin constraints; rigid trucks or transfer required

For consignments that are not containerised but still need scheduled road movement across these areas, our north Bali road freight and distribution service handles palletised and loose cargo on the same corridor.

How should you prepare a site for container delivery?

A container delivery fails on site far more often than it fails on the road, and the causes are consistent enough to be checked in advance in about ten minutes.

Check Why it matters
Approach width and overhead clearance Trees, cables and gateposts stop more trailers than gradient does
Ground bearing capacity Soft or newly filled ground bogs a loaded trailer
Turning and reversing space A trailer that cannot turn cannot leave
Unloading labour and equipment Forklift, pallet truck or crew must be present at the slot
Receiving contact on site Someone authorised to check and sign the delivery
Placement point for a grounded box Level hardstanding if the container will be left in position

We ask for photographs of the access road and gate before dispatch on any first-time delivery address. It prevents the most expensive outcome in this business — a loaded trailer that crosses the island and has to turn back.

Who uses container trucking in Buleleng?

Demand in the north skews toward project and seasonal flows rather than steady daily volume, which is why we quote per movement and schedule around your milestones instead of imposing fixed weekly runs.

Construction and development projects are the largest single driver — steel, cement, tiles and prefabricated units arriving on a build sequence where a late delivery idles a crew. Hospitality operators bring in FF&E during refurbishment cycles, distributors move consumer stock into regional warehouses, and agricultural exporters need empties positioned at packing sites against a vessel cut-off. Where the movement begins at the quayside rather than the depot, it is handled with our north Bali port logistics service so discharge and haulage are scheduled as one operation.

Frequently asked questions

Can a 40ft container be delivered to any address in North Bali?

No, and assuming otherwise is the most common planning error on this route. A 40ft trailer needs a wide approach, generous turning radius, firm ground and overhead clearance, and many properties around Lovina, Munduk and the eastern coastal road cannot provide all four. Where a site cannot take the vehicle, we devan the container at a yard and deliver the cargo by rigid truck in staged loads.

What are demurrage and detention, and who pays them?

Demurrage is charged by the terminal or line when a container occupies port space beyond the free period; detention is charged when you hold the line’s container beyond its free days. Both accrue daily and are billed to the consignee. Because they can quickly exceed the trucking cost, we schedule container movements backwards from the free-time expiry rather than forwards from arrival.

Do you handle empty container return?

Yes. Returning the empty box to the shipping line’s nominated depot within the free period is part of a standard container movement, not an extra service, because leaving it out of scope is what generates detention charges. We confirm the correct return depot with the line before collection, since the nominated depot is not always the one where the container was picked up.

Can you move refrigerated containers to North Bali?

Yes, reefer containers can be hauled on the north route, but they need continuous power and that requires planning. The unit must be powered at the terminal, run on a genset in transit if the journey duration requires it, and be plugged in on arrival — so the delivery site needs a suitable power supply ready. Temperature-sensitive cargo is often better staged through cold storage in North Bali instead.
